wheatgrass

What is it about wheatgrass that is turning otherwise normal people into raging wheatgrass fanatics?

We people can sometimes learn a thing or two from animals because they when it comes to health matters, many of them are extremely smart. I recently passed some cows on my way to a nearby farmer's market. They were blissfully munching grass while enjoying the onset of spring. I also saw a couple of dogs and cats munching on grass as well. Now you may turn your nose up at the thought of eating grass but animals love it.

And basically these cows, dogs, and cats have the right idea. There is currently a huge growth in the number of people taking wheatgrass. More and more people are taking the lead of the animals and hopping on the wheatgrass bandwagon. And more juice bars are offering it on their menus everyday.

Many health conscious people are using juicers to create some unique concoctions that include the precious wheatgrass. Many in the younger generation are taking shots of wheatgrass in a shot glass. Also, a great many morning stragglers will stop into their local juice bar to order a wheatgrass drink. And some older people are taking it as a means of increasing their energy levels.

A few of the more popular combinations include wheatgrass, ginger and garlic. This combination is great for the body but terrible for your breath. A great way to take the bite out of the wheatgrass shot is to follow it with a nice glass of freshly juiced carrots, pears, or apples. Celery, of course, is a natural breath-freshener that can work against the unfavorable after taste of the wheatgrass shots.

Only a few years ago, many of the same fashionable places that now serve wheatgrass shots were serving espresso and cappuccino. Just like its competitors, wheatgrass has a reputation for giving takers a surge of power upon consumption. However, unlike espresso and cappuccino, wheat grass does not fill your body with caffeine.

Not only that, but rare is the person that claims espresso or cappuccino give them relief from their ailments. Many will however swear that wheatgrass lessens the harmful symptoms often associated with chronic liver illness. While others claim that the wheatgrass provides antioxidants that it helps to support the immune system and even lower cholesterol.

It is, however, significant to note that wheatgrass is a supplement. It is not considered a food or a medicine and it is not necessary to pasteurize it. Also it does not have to go through any of the rigors mandated by the food and medicine administration. It is also necessary to know that, in some people, excess consumption of wheatgrass has been directly linked to diarrhea.

On a lighter note, if you do decide to buy into the positive effects of wheatgrass - you might also want to take a second look at whiskey and some of the other grain alcohols. After all, they come from wheat as well.

Happy drinking.
