New Berry Wise Antioxidant Supplement Hits Market

In 1991, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States outlined an ambitious program called 5 A Day, an effort to get North Americans to increase their daily intake of fruits and vegetables.

The program recommends five or more servings of vegetables and fruit each day. Unfortunately, according to the CDC's latest study conducted in 2003, just 27% of American women and a far less 18% of American men consumed the recommended amount of fruits or vegetables per day. Health organizations around the world have concluded that the general population fails to consume sufficient amounts of antioxidants, fiber, potassium and vitamins A and C, which are readily found in these foods.

The most pressing reason for promoting a program like 5 A Day are the health benefits linked with consuming vegetables and fruits, which suggest that these foods can help decrease the risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer. And, because less than a quarter of North Americans are taking full advantage of these recommendations, companies like Berry Health Inc. are creating nutritious, science-based formulas to help fill the gap.

Berry Health Inc. founder Dr. Paul Gross, an expert on antioxidant drugs and founding member of the International Berry Health Association, recognized the need for a convenient supplement and launched his products in May of this year. The two formulas - Berry Wise Antioxidant and Berry Wise Antioxidant & Fiber - are not intended as a substitute for meals, but are great-tasting powders for foods or drinks that provide natural antioxidant and fiber sources, while replacing bland tablets.

"Berry Wise supplements give the user a good start to achieving the 5 A Day," said Dr. Gross, a noted authority on cardiovascular and brain physiology. "We target 20% of the day's nutrient needs and 50% ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) and antioxidant vitamins A, C and E to establish that foundation."

The foundation of the Berry Wise formula, is, of course, berries. The CDC has high marks for the food as part of its program, calling berries "one of the nation's most well-liked fruits" and "brimming with vitamin C, potassium, and fiber." Berry Wise products are centered around the blueberry, labeled a Superfood by Vegetarian Times, but include a multitude of other beneficial dark berries, including the cranberry, strawberry and raspberry. Also included in the mix is the South American palmberry, recently featured on the "Oprah" show. A lesser-known exotic berry, the latest nutritional information reveals that the palmberry, also called açaí, is a powerful source of antioxidants. It's been called the most nutritious food in the world and can be found in both Berry Wise formulas.

The breakdown for Berry Wise's formulas, which can be purchased In the United States and Canada at www.Berrywiseinc.com , includes nine berries, 12 essential vitamins, nine minerals, four fibers and, most importantly, a high dose of antioxidants, commonly recognized as a cancer preventative.

Said Dr. Gross: "One goal for Berry Wise users is that the investment and use of our products hopefully remind each consumer throughout the day to eat wisely and continue the day's nutrition format started with Berry Wise.".
