Can a 60 proof acai berry liquor drink be good for you?

Earlier this year, two brothers, Courtney and Carter Reum, introduced VeeV, a 60-proof acai liqueur that also contains extract of prickly pear, a cactus that has been shown in tests to reduce symptoms of alcohol hangover, if taken before drinking alcohol.

Veeve has been showing up in bars in Los Angeles adding to the list of dietary supplements that are increasingly finding their way into cocktails of all sorts.

Van Gogh ® has added to its fast growing spirits inventory by creating a line of super premium vodkas. New flavors include the Acai - Blueberry Vodka, Banana Vodka and Pomegranate Vodka.

The foods we eat are seemingly becoming healthier these days. You can find organic rums, "healthy" vodkas, vitamin infused gins, and many more exotic mixtures of alcohol and dietary supplements. Could it all be just one big marketing ploy?

Whether it's good for you or not, it apparently hasn't stopped many companies from spiking their drinks with the miracle fruits of the hour - mainly acai and pomegranate.

A perfect example is the drink, PAMA, a pomegranate liqueur introduced to the market last year. It's made with "all-natural" California pomegranates, and is being billed as the world's first true pomegranate liqueur.

I think we can all agree that nutrition is good for us all, but seriously, if you want to stay healthy you might not want to drink too much liquor in the first place.

In addition, many of the drinks containing the acai berry fruit are not made directly from the acai berry. They are made from acai berry concentrates which have had many of their natural nutrients destroyed in the refining process.

Furthermore, because acai is so expensive, you are probably getting much less of it than you think you are in the typical bottle.

Bottom line, if you feel compelled to drink an acai or pomegranate infused drink, make sure you're drinking it for the taste, not for it's health benefits.
